CSS Florida was built on the River Mersey, under the name `Oreto` for security reasons, by William C. Miller & Son in conjunction with Fawcett & Preston. On 22nd March 1862 Oreto sailed out of the Mersey as a merchant ship for the Bahamas. By August of that year she was converted into a warship, commissioned into the Confederate Navy and re-named CSS Florida.
